When Should I Repair Storm Damage to My Roof?

There’s no doubt about it; strong thunderstorms are one of the top concerns for homeowners. Other than a few cosmetic damages to the home, strong thunderstorms can cause severe storm damage to a home’s roof. This, of course, can lead to higher energy bills, damage to your curb appeal, and a hazardous environment. However, all this can be avoided by simply understanding when it is the right time for a roof repair. Read on to learn about some of the most common roof damages and when it’s necessary to bring in a professional roofing company to conduct repairs. 

Shingles are Missing

One of the most common characteristics of a thunderstorm is intense wind. Strong winds can damage a home in a variety of ways, but the most common include damages to the home’s shingles. Shingles can be broken or completely torn off by strong winds or debris landing on them throughout the duration of the storm. Shingles are extremely important because they are deemed as your home roof’s first line of defense. Failure to repair missing or broken shingles may lead to further damages in the form of mold and the introduction of pests.

This is because flashing protects exposed areas of your roof, such as your chimney, vents, skylights, and edges of a roof. Although extremely durable, flashing must be checked carefully as a storm may be strong enough to open small gaps between the material and what it’s protecting. Visible Water Damage within Your Home

Possibly the worst-case scenario for a homeowner is seeing water damage on and within their walls. The water inside your walls is not only a huge inconvenience, but it can also be extremely expensive and dangerous for your entire family. This is because mold can quickly grow and spread throughout the structure of your home. It also prevents sunlight from penetrating into your attic and keeps most pests outside where they belong. Failure to repair this area can quickly lead to small and inexpensive repairs to balloon out of budget. This is why it is so important to check the condition of your water sealant after a strong thunderstorm occurs. 

As you can see from the information above, strong thunderstorms can cause a lot of damage to a home’s roof. Although expensive and time-consuming, repairs must be made as soon as the damage has been discovered, as prolonging repairs can lead to further damages or an unsafe environment for your family. That, of course, begins by researching and hiring the right roofing repair company for the job.
